Russia’s next space station-bound spacecraft named for first cosmonaut

Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubrov, along with NASA astronaut Mark Hei, are set to raise off to the Worldwide Area Station on Russia’s Soyuz MS-18 , which has been named the “Yu.A. Gagarin.”

“Based on established custom, the house mission that’s closest to [the launch] date of the world’s first cosmonaut is devoted to Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, whose title already adorns the thermal insulation on the outside of the ship’s orbital module,” acknowledged Roscosmos on its website.

Launched on April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth as soon as on board his Vostok capsule. The history-making mission lasted only one hour and 48 minutes.
