Saturday March 20th is an equinox day. Whereas sometimes referred to as the Vernal or Spring Equinox it’s extra globally applicable to name at the present time the March Equinox as it’s the begin of Fall within the Southern Hemisphere. The official time for the equinox is 09:40 UT on the 20th which for my time zone is 5:40 am CDT. So for these within the northern hemisphere winter is ending and spring has ‘sprung’ (begins). From a geographical perspective we’d describe the Solar as being over the Earth’s equator, and as this graphic exhibits there can be an equal quantity of daylight and evening on our planet in consequence.
At mid-day on the equator the solar is immediately overhead and from that latitude you don’t have any elongated shadow, only a ‘blob-like’ shadow at your ft as this image of my ft taken at mid-day in Quito Ecuador exhibits.
No matter your hemispheric choice get outdoors and forged a shadow!
Northern hemisphere spring, Astronomically talking, is when the Solar reaches the celestial coordinates of 0 hours and 0 degrees because it strikes northward alongside the ecliptic crossing the celestial equator. At this location the Solar is simply inside the constellation of Pisces the Fishes and not coming into Aries the Ram because the pseudoscience of astrology would have you ever consider.

Throughout a visit to Quito Ecuador to go to one of many change pupil we had hosted, and her household, we spent the day at a Museum on the equator, Mitad del Mundo. I introduced alongside my over-sized protractor realizing upfront that we’d be on the museum. So at mid-day I had my spouse stand on the equator (yellow line) and maintain a string to the highest of her head whereas Cathy, a sister of our change pupil, held the protractor. This was completed in the course of the summer season so the Solar was over the northern horizon at mid-day and the Solar’s angle above the northern horizon was round 75o.
Here’s a quick collection of hourly photos taken in the course of the day on the September equinox on the equator in Quito Ecuador at Collegio Menor San Francisco de Quito, a non-public faculty that I visited and did the SunShIP venture with (Solar Shadow Investigation Project).
