Lava tubes in Hawaii could be a dress rehearsal for Mars colonies

When people construct the primary bases and habitats on different worlds, they will confront risks and challenges not like any confronted by the astronauts who went earlier than them. To arrange for such challenges, scientists are descending deep underground into lava tubes in Hawaii that simulate situations on rocky alien worlds.

There, mission crew members navigate uneven volcanic terrain and endure the bodily constraints of performing analysis in a hostile surroundings. Sporting cumbersome fits like these required for extraterrestrial exploration, the scientists examine the geology and organisms present in lava tunnels and caverns at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano
