Meet Middle Peninsula Native and Commercial Loan Officer, Kasey Milby

Born and raised in Gloucester County, Kasey Milby is well suited to work with the businesses in the community. Kasey started her journey into banking as a student in high school, and in the blink of an eye, she’s been with Chesapeake Bank for 18 years.

Working with small businesses in her community is remarkable for Kasey. She takes pride in helping find solutions for her customers. As a commercial loan officer, she can work with companies to get them the correct type of loan and the best fit for their situation.

“I feel like with loans, I am well versed and know the process inside and out,” says Kasey.

This makes perfect sense because just like she followed a path in her education — from high school to Rappahannock Community College to Old Dominion University and now at the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University — Kasey worked her way through the ranks to where she is today. And at each step, she learned and grew.

“I started through an internship as a part-time teller, just trying to dip my feet in the water,” says Kasey. “That got me started in my role. While I was on the teller line, I would ask the loan officers if there was anything I could help them with when it was slow.

“It was a lot of little things that were easy for me to do, which took stress off their plate,” Kasey remembers. “As I was doing that, slowly, they were giving me more things to help with. Then I became a part-time loan assistant after I graduated from high school.”

“When I graduated from ODU, I was promoted to loan portfolio manager, which is basically doing the underwriting of the commercial loans and the processing of the files and working with the attorney’s offices to get the files and everything prepped for closing,” says Kasey. “I became a commercial loan officer after that.”

Each step of Kasey’s career journey prepared her for the next until she landed in her current role. Kasey works alongside Steve Callis, and together they handle commercial loan operations in Mathews and Gloucester Counties. Kasey says that Steve is “awesome” and that together they are a “great team.”

The best part of her job is finding the right way to help a small business get what they need from the bank. Chesapeake Bank’s role, according to Kasey, is to be an advisor for  small businesses and help them to grow and succeed.

“Sometimes customers don’t know what they need,” says Kasey. “Sometimes, it’s up to me to put them in the right product.”

Kasey says that thanks to the way the bank was able to help customers during the PPP rollout, she has been able to meet and serve new businesses in her area.  She says that customers were so pleased for the assistance from  Chesapeake Bank  that many brought their entire banking relationship to Chesapeake.  

“Customers were shocked at getting a real person on the phone or our direct email responses,” says Kasey. “Many customers that had only one account with Chesapeake Bank, moved all of their business to us to be their primary bank. This also allowed me to do thorough reviews of their financials to restructure their debt properly – or to confirm if they were already in the right product.”

“That’s part of what it is,” says Kasey. “If a customer comes in for one small loan, I will review all of their loans that they have on their credit report and any of the business loans just to make sure their rates are where they should be.”

“And also, if we can clean any of it up — sometimes people will use a line of credit to purchase equipment, and it sits out there on an interest-only variable-rate loan, and they have a hard time paying down the principal on the loan,” Kasey explains.

She says that one relationship blossomed into numerous referrals which lead to many new customers starting relationships with Chesapeake Bank. Kasey refuses to take the credit, saying that it’s a team effort within the Middle Peninsula lending team, the data analytics department, the staff at the branches, the deposit operations team, the loan operations team and the folks who work at the customer solution center.

“I love my work, and I love Chesapeake Bank,” says Kasey. “And I love my customers too!”
